Building a bed platform is one of the most critical steps in any camper van conversion. If you are working with a 144 Sprinter, the Tec Vanlife USA Panel Bed System offers a sturdy, adjustable, and sleek solution. This guide will walk you through the entire installation process, from mounting the brackets to sliding in the final panels.
Tools You Will Need:
-
Power Drill
-
7/16 Drill Bit
-
Drill Stop
-
Rivet Nut Tool (Rivnut setter)
-
Rivet Nuts
-
Stainless Steel Bolts
-
Rust Proofing Paint/Spray
-
Marker/Pencil
-
Measuring Tape
-
Cutting tool (if rail adjustment is needed)
Step 1: Position the Mounting Brackets
Start by identifying the factory holes in your Sprinter van's wall structure. The Tec Vanlife brackets are designed to utilize these existing points for initial alignment.
-
Bolt the bracket loosely through the factory hole to hold it in place.
-
Ensure the bracket is perfectly vertical relative to the floor.
-
Once aligned, use a marker to mark the additional holes that need to be drilled into the van wall.

Step 2: Drill the Bracket Holes
Remove the mounting brackets so you don't damage them while drilling.
-
Using a 7/16 drill bit, drill the holes you just marked.
-
Pro Tip: Use a drill stop on your bit. This prevents the drill from punching through too deep and damaging the exterior skin of your van.

Step 3: Rust Proofing & Cleanup
Metal shavings can lead to rust spots later on.
-
Thoroughly remove any metal shavings from the drilled area.
-
Apply a rust-proofing paint or spray to the exposed metal inside the newly drilled holes to protect your van's chassis.
Step 4: Install the Brackets
Now that the holes are prepped, place the mounting brackets back into position. Ensure all holes align perfectly before tightening them down.
Step 5: Test Fit & Mark the Mounting Rails
With the brackets securely on the wall, it's time to prep the long mounting rails that will support the bed panels.
-
Place the rails onto the installed brackets to test the fit.
-
Mark the hole locations: You need to mark where the rail connects to the wall frame at both ends.
-
Note: In this 144 Sprinter installation, they utilized the upper pre-drilled hole on each end of the rail for the best fit.

Step 6: Drill Rail Holes & Install Rivet Nuts
-
Remove the rails and drill the marked holes (again, use a drill stop!)
-
Install rivet nuts into these holes. Rivet nuts provide a threaded insert in the thin metal of the van wall, allowing you to bolt the rails down securely.
Step 7: Cut Rails to Size (If Necessary)
Every van build is different. For this specific layout, the passenger-side mounting rail needed to be shortened to 65.5 inches to ensure it didn't protrude into the sliding door opening. Measure your specific space and cut the rails if needed.
Step 8: Bolt Down the Mounting Rails
Secure the mounting rails to the wall using the rivet nuts you installed earlier.
-
Hardware: Use stainless steel bolts.
-
Alternative: If you can access the back of the wall frame with your hand, you can use through-bolts with self-locking nuts instead of rivet nuts for added security.
Step 9: Install the Bed Panels
Finally, install the three main bed panels.
-
Angle it: Hold the panel at a slight angle to avoid scratching the powder-coated rails or the aluminum sides.
-
Slide it: Carefully lower the panel until it sits flat in the rail channel.
-
Repeat: Do this for all three panels. They are rated for a dynamic weight load of ~1200 lbs, so they are incredibly sturdy.

Conclusion
And there you have it! Your Tec Vanlife Panel Bed System is installed and ready for adventure. This system is a game-changer for Sprinter conversions, offering a high-end finish and massive weight capacity.
